The Fetch Me a Pen (FMaP) project was established in 2013 to improve secondary teacher and student knowledge, confidence, skills and practice around academic literacy, with a particular focus on writing. Teachers are helped to identify gaps in their pupils’ knowledge and then learn the skills to respond.
FMaP encourages teachers and pupils to have fun with language in order to help pupils develop their own strong, academic voice appropriate for each subject they study - seeing writing as a means to learn; the process of writing allowing pupils to deepen their understanding. FMaP has successfully fostered a culture of academic literacy and helped devise an innovative approach to professional learning.
This presentation shares the project’s vision and journey, and includes practical approaches and strategies to support students’ writing for use in classrooms, within subject areas and across whole schools.
