Diversity: Race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

With the increasing emphasis on the ‘intent’ of your curriculum, it is imperative that schools are reflecting on this and assessing whether it prepares students with a true understanding and appreciation of diversity, particularly given the increasingly divisive nature of the world.

Embedding diversity can seem like a daunting task, especially as it is something that needs to be handled with sensitivity as well as avoiding seeming tokenistic. Moreover, for diversity to be meaningful it needs to be driven from all levels. A true commitment to prioritising diversity will not only inspire students but is also likely to energise and engage staff at all levels.  As citizens of an ever-changing world it is imperative that our students are armed with an appreciation and greater knowledge of diverse stories and contexts. The session will cover ways to effectively research and showcase relevant and inspiring role models that go beyond the traditional and mainstream as well as other ideas that will allow diversity to be embedded so that students of your school have a truly intersectional experience. A range of methods will be discussed, from whole school projects to sharing resources that support the sharing of diverse stories for all mainstream subjects.
