Learning is at the heart of everything we do at Riverside: “The most powerful way
that school leaders make a difference to the learning of their students is by
promoting and participating in the professional learning and development of
teachers” Robinson (2011).

Riverside’s professional learning achieves consistency in the quality of teaching
across all departments setting high expectations for all learners. Encompassing a
developmental approach, professional learning is a platform for capacity building to
shape a network of teachers who are self-regulating: reflecting on their practice;
strategising next steps; refining; implementing and reviewing again. The cyclical
model is underpinned by ‘deep’ professional learning. When there is a clear golden
thread throughout each form of professional learning, from whole school to the
individual teacher, the impact is not only seen in teacher development but also
student attainment. The session will highlight our essential ingredients needed to
foster the right culture for professional learning which are underpinned by strong
school values.

Leaders and teachers from other schools would see the individual professional
learning elements but more importantly see how they are interconnected and behave
as a whole. Leaders would take away the effective planning method and delivery of
professional learning so it mirrors the fundamentals of a lesson i.e. planned
opportunities for AfL to identify and address teacher misconceptions (as you would in
a lesson). This concept could be easily transferred into any school setting. Leaders
and teachers would gain an insight into the decision making behind the professional
learning sequencing; the monitoring and evaluation processes i.e. leadership
evaluations, student data, observations and how this is used in a supportive way to
accelerate teacher development and retain the developmental culture.

This session is applicable for all practitioners and leaders, irrespective of setting.
